The Golden-crowned Tanager is distributed in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador and northern Peru. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found at and around the tree-line mainly between 2,100 and 3,600 metres.

This spectacular looking tanager normally forages close to the ground looking for seeds and insects.
