Golden-collared Toucanet Selenidera reinwardtii |
||||
Amazonas, Brazil and Napo, Ecuador
The Golden-collared Toucanet is distributed in the western part of the Amazon Basin. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in forest and forest edges where it feeds mainly on fruit but also on insects and small birds. |
||||
There are two sub-species which have very different bill colouring. Photos 1 to 3 are of the subspecies S. r
langsdorffii which has a black bill but with the base a green-grey colour.
The male, seen in photos 1 and 2 has a black crown, throat and belly while this is replaced by chestnut in the female which you can partly see in photo 3. |

Birdlife International and Birds of the World split this species into Golden-collared Toucanet S. langsdorffii and Red-billed Toucanet S. reinwardtii on the basis of bill and plumage colour. Clements and eBird lump them. The former is distributed more to the east of the latter but the two subspecies appear to interbreed in northern Peru.
Photos 4 to 6 show the nominate subspecies with the red bill, photo 4 being a female and photos 5 and 6 a male feeding on Cecropia fruits.
