| Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil August 2004 The Giant Wood-rail is distributed in central and south-east Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina. It is found in marshes, pastures near water and in gallery forest and is the most likely of its genus to be seen out in the open. |

| It has olive upperparts, a chestnut hind neck and a black tail. The face and foreneck are pale bluish grey and the flanks and upper breast are a delicate browny pink. Legs and iris are reddish-pink while the bill moves from pale orange at the base through apple green to greyish yellow at the tip. It has a very loud voice and you can hear a Jacques Vieillard recording at the Brazilian Environment Ministry website. |
