The Ecuadorian Piculet is distributed in western Ecuador and north-west Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry deciduous forest and arid scrubby areas up to 1,800 metres.

Dr Philip Sclater (1829-1913) was the founder and editor of the magazine Ibis and the editor of the journal of the British Ornithological Union.
