The Dusky-tailed Canastero is distributed in Chile from south-west Antofagasta to Malleco. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is one of the few Chilean endemics although there is an old record from Argentina that might be valid.
Dusky-tailed Canastero, La Campana N.P., Chile, January 2007 - click for larger image It is found in arid and semi-arid scrub from sea-level to about 1,200 metres which as approximately the elevation at which these photos were taken.

The tail is blackish and it has a whitish supercilium and dark eye-line. The wings are dark brown with a rufous shoulder and the throat and breast are grey with dark streaks.
