The Dull-colored Grassquit is distributed from Venezuela through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Boliva to western Paraguay and north-western Argentina. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in fields, gardens, scrub and forest edges between 350 and 3,100 metres.

It is similar to many female seedeaters but can be distinguished by its more pointed, bicoloured bill.
