Bermejas, Zapata Swamp, Cuba February 2005 The Bare-legged Owl is endemic to Cuba where it is found in forest and wooded areas with palms. It is dark brown above with white spots and pale grey below with faint streaks. The eyes are brown with conspicuous white eyebrows. The first photo shows the bare legs which gives the species its alternative English name. They nest in holes in trees, often abandoned woodpecker holes. We disturbed this bird when it was in its nest as shown in photo 2. Normally they are strictly nocturnal. |
