The Cinnamon Woodpecker is distributed from southern Nicaragua south to Colombia and western Ecuador. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the subcanopy and borders of humid forests.

It is the only Celeus woodpecker found west of the Andes. This female lacks the red malar stripe of the male.
