The Cinereous Tinamou is distributed throughout most of Amazonia and into the Guianas. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the dense undergrowth of the tropical rainforest especially in seasonally flooded forest or varzéa.

Its song is a sharp whistle lasting about a second and repeated every 5 seconds sometimes for minutes on end. It can sound a bit mournful.
