The Chilean Pigeon is found in central and southern Chile and adjacent areas of the extreme west of Argentina. It is found mainly in southern beech Nothofagus forest where it is usually perched silently in a tree.

Chilean Pigeon, La Campana N.P., Chile, November 2005 - click for larger image It is a large, dark pigeon mainly wine-coloured with grey wings. It also has a thin white band at the back of the neck above an iridescent greenish patch. The legs and eye are red while the bill is blackish-grey.
