The Cauca Guan is restricted to a small area in the middle and upper Cauca Valley on the western and central cordilleras. See the distribution map at NatureServe. It is found in humid forest at between 1,300 and 2,100 metres. It is classified as Endangered by Birdlife International.

Cauca Guan, Otún-Quimbaya, Risaralda, Colombia, April 2012 - click for larger image For many years this species was thought to be almost extinct. Steve Hilty in his 1986 Birds of Colombia stated "Status: Uncertain, poss. near extinction (no recent recs.)" It has since been found in a few areas one of which is the Otún-Quimbaya Reserve about 20kms from Pereira. I lived in Pereira in the 1990s but the area of the reserve was off-limits as it was under control of the FARC. Only recently has it been safe to go there.
