The Caatinga Antshrike is distributed in north-east Brazil from eastern Piauí to Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte and south to central Bahia and the north of Minas Gerais. As its English name suggests it is found in caatinga.

Male Caatinga Antshrike, Chapada de Araripe, Ceará, Brazil, October 2008 - click for a larger image Almost all authorities such as the HBW and Birdlife International Checklist regard this as a sub-species of Barred Antshrike T. doliatus but the Brazilian Ornithological Records Committee (CBRO) treats it as a separate species.

In comparison with Barred Antshrike it has a shorter and thicker bill, a reddish iris and, on the male, an all-black crown. The female is chestnut rather than black with a heavily streaked throat and thin dark bars on the breast.
