The Buff-throated Foliage-gleaner is distributed from the south of Mexico through Central America to much of north-west South America. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the undergrowth of humid forest and woodland and often in seasonally flooded forest.

It has a buff eyering, supercilium and throat.
