The Brown-capped Vireo is distributed from Mexico through Central America to Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in montane forest, forest edges, secondary growth and plantations mainly from about 600 to 2,800 metres.
