The Brown-billed Scythebill is distributed from Costa Rica and Panama through Colombia and Ecuador to north-west Peru with a disjunct population in north-west Venezuela. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in humid tropical and sub-tropical forest.

The identification from this very poor photo is based on the fact that it is the only Scythebill in this area of Ecuador.
