The Blue-winged Teal breeds in the United States and Canada and winters in Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. Overwintering birds are found on lakes, ponds and marshes and are to be seen in South America mainly between October and April. This photo taken in April shows a male moving back into breeding plumage.
