Having thought a lot about the identification of this bird, we came to the conclusion that it was a subadult male Blue-black Grosbeak. This was on the basis that it had many of the physical features of the species and its colouring was about halfway between the deep blue black of the male and the deep cocoa brown of the female. If you have any better ideas, please let me know.

It was flitting between the ground and this perch in the rather scrubby vegetation at the top of the Serra Trail at Cristalino.
