The Blue-backed Tanager is distributed in the Guianas and adjoining Venezuela as well as close to Manaus but north of the Amazon. These photos were taken south of the Amazon at Borba so represent a range extension.

Female Blue-backed Tanager, Borba, Amazonas, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image The first two photos are of a female with upperparts bright blue, a mostly yellow face, buffy throat and breast leading to a bright yellow belly. It is difficult to make out the bill in these photos but it is heavy and slightly curved while the iris is orange. The male is even brighter in colour with bright blue on the entire head and onto the throat and upper breast.

It is found in the forest canopy which might lead to a degree of under-reporting.

Male Blue-backed Tanager, Caxiuanã, Pará, Brazil, November 2005 - click for larger image This third photo is of a male taken from the tower at Caxiuanã, Pará near the mouth of the Amazon. This is outside the range mentioned by Ridgely & Tudor and the Islers but the species is mentioned in a trip list from Brett Whitney covering Caxiuanã.
