The Black-winged Ground-dove is distributed in the Andes of south-west Colombia and through Peru, Chile and the extreme west of Argentina to Tierra del Fuego. It is found in dry puna and Andean scrub mostly above 2,000m but lower down further south.

Mostly brown, it has blackish wings and, in flight has 2 white "headlights" on the leading edge of the wings which can be seen in photo 4.
