The Black-headed Trogon is distributed from southern Mexico through Central America to Costa Rica. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Unlike most trogons it can be found in more open habitats such as pastures, plantations and gardens as well as both humid and dry forest. It nests in termite nests in trees into which a nest cavity is excavated.

Both sexes have a bright yellow belly and mainly grey elsewhere with a pale blue eyering and pale horn bill. The female is duller while the male is shinier and with shiny blue-green on the nape. Photo 1 is of a female and photo 2 of a male.
