The Black-capped Piprites is distributed in south-east Brazil and the extreme north-east of Argentina. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in the Atlantic Rain Forest mainly between 900 and 2,000 metres and is often associated with Araucaria trees.

It is classified as Near Threatened given its restricted range and the threat to its habitat. Generally difficult to see but often discovered through its distinctive voice.
