The Black-backed Water-tyrant is an active and conspicuous bird found on or near the ground in marsh and riverine habitats.

Black-backed Water-tyrant, Marchantaria Island, Amazonas, Brazil, July 2001 - click for larger image Its range includes the lower Amazon southwards to northern Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia but excluding south-east Brazil. During the Austral winter it migrates into western Amazonia.

It has all white underparts and mostly black upperparts with a white forehead, sides of the head and white-spotted wing-bar.
