Peruibe, Sao Paulo, Brazil October 2022 The Black-backed Tanager is distributed along the coast of Brazil from Espirito Santo to Rio Grande do Sul. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in coastal scrub, forest and gardens. |

It looks very similar to Chestnut-backed Tanager S. preciosa
with the exception of having a black back. Indeed for a long time it was assumed to be a colour morph of that species.
It is classified as Vulnerable given that it is rare and local and is found in coastal restinga habitat which is under threat from real estate development. |
