The Bay-headed Tanager is distributed from Nicaragua south through Central America to Colombia, Venezuela, the Guyanas and into the Amazon Basin. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the canopy and borders of forest and woodland where it feeds mainly on fruits.

Photo 1 from the western slope of the central Andes is the sub-species T. g. deleticia with bright blue below while photo 2 from Santa Marta is the sub-species T. g. toddi which is all green below. Photo 3 from the eastern slope of the Andes in Peru is the sub-species T. g. catharinae.
