The Bay-headed Tanager is distributed from Nicaragua south through Central America to Colombia, Venezuela, the Guyanas and into the Amazon Basin. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in the canopy and borders of forest and woodland where it feeds mainly on fruits.

Photo 1 from the western slope of the central Andes is the sub-species T. g. deleticia with bright blue below while photo 2 from Santa Marta is the sub-species T. g. toddi which is all green below. Photo 3 from the eastern slope of the Andes in Peru is the sub-species T. g. catharinae.
