The Bare-throated Tiger-heron is distributed in Central America from Mexico through Panama and into north-west Colombia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found on the coast especially in mangroves and also inland in swamps, streams and rivers where it feeds on fish, frogs and shellfish. It appears to be mainly crepuscular or nocturnal.
