The Austral Thrush is distributed in central and southern Chile, southern Argentina and the Falkland Isles. It is found in a variety of habitats from the edge of southern beech Nothofagus forest to farmland and gardens.

Austral  Thrush, Torres del Paine, Chile, December 2005 - click for larger image It is grey-brown above with a blackish head and orange-buff below. The throat is white with blackish streaks, it has a yellow eye-ring and its bill and legs are yellow.

The juvenile is spotted below and on its back as seen in photo 5. Photo 6 shows a nest which was about 3 metres up a tree and photo 7 shows an Austral Thrush with a deformed bill.

It has a melodic, whistled song which you can hear on xeno-canto.
