The Ash-colored Tapaculo is distributed in the Andes from northern Colombia to central Peru. See the distribution map at NatureServe. It is found in the undergrowth of montane forest mainly between 2,300 and 3,500.

As with most tapaculos it is difficult to see and to photograph but, fortunately, this bird was recorded by Jeremy Minns.
