The American Pygmy-kingfisher is distributed from southern Mexico through Central America and throughout most of the Amazon Basin and Brazil except in the north-east. It is found in dense vegetation beside small streams, rivers and ponds where it fishes for small fish and tadpoles as well as hunting for insects.

All three photos are of a female showing a dark green breast band with white spots. This is lacking in the male but otherwise the plumage is similar.
