| American Pygmy Kingfisher (Chloroceryle aenea) Brazilian name: martinho |
||||
| Pixaim River, Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brazil December 2006 The American Pygmy Kingfisher is distributed from southern Mexico through Central America and throughout most of the Amazon Basin and Brazil except in the north-east. It is found in dense vegetation beside small streams, rivers and ponds where it fishes for small fish and tadpoles as well as hunting for insects. |

| It is closely related to and similar in appearance to the Green-and-rufous Kingfisher C. inda but is much smaller (slightly smaller than a House Sparrow) and has a white belly. All three photos are of a female showing a dark green breast band with white spots. This is lacking in the male but otherwise the plumage is similar. |
