The Whiskered Tern breeds patchily across the Old World with many populations migrating towards the Equator during the non-breeding season. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Whiskered Tern, Kakadu, Northern Territory, Australia, October 2013 - click for larger image It is found mainly on inland fresh water and only occasionally on the coast. When feeding, it usually patrols at about 5 metres above the surface of the water from where it swoops down to pick an insect of the surface of the water. These birds are in non-breeding plumage.
