The Tawny-crowned Honeyeater is endemic to Australia where it is distributed in the south-west and the south-east of the country including Tasmania. It is found mainly in coastal and inland heathlands usually with Banksia bushes or stunted Eucalyptus trees and it feeds on nectar and insects.
