The Spectacled Monarch is distributed in eastern Australia from Cape York to New South Wales and in New Guinea and some nearby islands. It is partly migratory in Australia but the migratory movements are not well known (HBW).

The sub-species shown here is S. t. melanorrhous which has blackish uppertail coverts and deeper grey upperparts.
