The Sooty Oystercatcher is distributed around the coasts of Australia including Tasmania. It breeds mainly on sand and shingle beaches especially on offshore islands. Outside the breeding season it is found on mudflats and sandy beaches.

Sooty Oystercatcher, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, February 2006 - click for larger image It is overall sooty black with a brownish wash on the wings when seen in strong sunlight. The bill is scarlet and the legs are dull pink.
