The Pacific Black Duck is distributed in most of Australia apart from the arid centre, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and other nearby islands. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. In Australia it is one of the most common ducks and is found in a variety of wetland habitats including ornamental parks.

Pacific Black Duck, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, January 2006 - click for larger image It has a distinctive face pattern and is otherwise dark brown with pale edgings to the feathers. In flight it has white underwings and a dark green to purple speculum with black edging.

Photo 6 shows a pair copulating while photo 7 shows the same pair post coitus.
