The Northern Fantail is distributed in New Guinea and surrounding islands and in the north of Australia from Broome, WA to north-east Queensland. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in open mixed forest, on the edge of rainforest and in mangroves.

Northern Fantail, Howard Springs, Northern Territory, Australia, October 2013 - click for larger image It is differentiated from the Grey Fantail R. albiscapa by the absence of white on the face apart from an eyebrow streak and the broad grey breast band with white streaks. They also fan their tails much less and have a more upright posture when perched.
