The distribution of the Mistletoebird is determined by the distribution of mistletoe plants so it is found throughout most of Australia except Tasmania (where there is no mistletoe) as well as in Papua New Guinea. There is a distribution map at Birdlife International.

Photos 1 and 2 are of female birds. The male in photo 3 is very handsome with glossy blue-black upperparts and scarlet throat and breast and undertail coverts.
