The Lesser Sand Plover breeds at or above the tree-line from the central Himalayas and Tibet to southern Mongolia and north-east Siberia including Kamchatka. It winters on the coasts and estuaries of eastern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, India, south-east Asia and Australia. See the distribution map at Planet of Birds.

Lesser Sand Plover, Cairns, Queensland, Australia, November 2010 - click for larger image In non-breeding plumage it is similar to Greater Sand Plover C. leschenaultii but is smaller with a rounder head, a less heavy and shorter bill (length equal to the distance from base of bill to the rear of the eye), and shorter legs especially above the "knee".
