The Great-billed Heron is distributed in the southern part of south-east Asia and through the islands to New Guinea and the north of Australia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found mainly on the coast in mangroves, estuaries and swamps but also penetrates inland along major rivers.

It is largely crepuscular which makes it quite difficult to see.

Its call is a harsh croak.

There is excellent information about this species at Heron Conservation.
