The Fairy Martin is endemic to Australia where it is distributed throughout most of the mainland but not in Tasmania or parts of the south-west. It is found in open areas usually near water.

These birds were gathering mud from the edge of a water hole with which they would be building their mud bottle shaped nests. An alternative name in Australia is Bottle Swallow.
