The Brown Quail is distributed in the coastal lowlands of Australia including Tasmania except along the Great Australian Bight and the north-west. It is also in New Guinea and neighbouring parts of Indonesia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in grasses near wetlands and in swampy coastal heaths.
