The American Wigeon breeds in from Alaska and Canada south to north-east California and northern Colorado. It winters along the Atlantic and Pacific coast of North America and south through Central America as far as Panama. It also reaches Hawaii while a few birds are seen as far away as Colombia, Venezuela and the British Isles.  
American Wigeon, Dezadeash Lake, Yukon, Canada, May 2009 - click on image for a larger view The male has a white forehead and centre of the crown with a dark green stripe over the eye. In flight the male has a broad white wing patch while the female's is narrower as can be seen in photo 4.
