The Whiskered Tern is widely but patchily distributed in the Old World. For a distribution map see Avibirds.com.

Whiskered Tern, Al Warsan Lakes, Dubai, November 2010 - click for larger image It is found mainly on inland fresh water and only occasionally on the coast. When feeding, it usually patrols at about 5 metres above the surface of the water from where it swoops down to pick an insect of the surface of the water as can be seen in photo 1.

This bird is in non-breeding plumage.
