The Western Reef-egret is distributed in tropical west Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and east to India where it is found on or near the coast.

There are white and dark morphs with some intermediate colours.

The taxonomy of the species is not entirely clear. HBW classify it as a sub-species of Little Egret E. garzetta and, indeed, the white morph looks very similar.
