The Tawny Pipit breeds from central / southern Europe and north-west Africa through Russia, Turkey and Afghanistan to southern Siberia and extreme north-western China. It overwinters in Africa, mainly south of the Sahara, the Middle East and India. In the UAE it is a very common migrant and winter visitor arriving mid-September and departing late April.

Tawny Pipit, Pivot Fields, Dubai, November 2010 - click for larger image It is a fairly large, slim pipit with an upright stance similar to wagtails. The tail, legs and bill are all relatively long. The breast is buff and unstreaked in adult birds while the belly is white. There are thin but discernible malar and moustachial stripes.

The song is a disyllabic or trisyllabic note repeated at regular intervals of 1 to 3 seconds.
