The Purple Heron breeds in southern and central Europe and through India and south-east Asia to China. The European and Chinese populations migrate south in the winter. In the case of European birds this is mainly to Africa south of the Sahara. It is a fairly common migrant to the UAE.

It is more often seen in dense vegetation than many other herons.

There is a distribution map and other excellent information at Heron Conservation.
