The Black Redstart breeds from western Europe and north Africa through to central China. More northerly breeding populations migrate southwards to India, the Middle East and east Africa during the northern winter.

The male has dark upperparts with black extending to at least below the throat.

It prefers stony slopes and rocky areas but can also be found in woodlands and near human habitation. The nest is in rock crevices or walls.
