Near Kingussie, Scotland June 2012 The European Pine Marten is distributed in most of Europe and into western Siberia and the Middle East. See a distribution map here. It is found in mature deciduous and coniferous forests where it feeds mainly on small mammals such as Field Voles and Lemmings but will also hunt larger prey such as Red Squirrels. Birds, berries and carrion are other items of diet. They are mainly nocturnal which is why I was surprised to see this individual at 3pm. It was crossing the ground in a Silver Birch wood before climbing up a tree as soon as it felt my presence. |
