The African Savanna Elephant is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara in areas of savanna, bushland and dry woodland. See the distribution map at IUCN.

Subject both to habitat loss and poaching for ivory it is classified as Vulnerable. In West Africa there are less than 10,000 individuals.

It is the largest land animal.
