The Hill Prinia is distributed from eastern Afghanistan through the Himalayas to southern and eastern China  and Taiwan.

It is found in similar habitat to Hill Prinia P. atrogularis, i.e. grassy hill and mountain sides with some scrub or shrub cover at mainly between 1,200 and 3,100 metres during the breeding season. It migrates to lower altitudes in the winter.

It is very similar to Hill Prinia but has a streaked crown, mantle and back and it lacks a supercilium.
