The Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher is distributed along the Himalayas into central and southern China and Indochina. In the Himalayas it breeds at between 2,400 and 3,800 metres but migrates to lower altitudes during the winter. It is found in forest and thick scrub.

The rufous gorget is sometimes visible as in photo 1 and sometimes hidden as in photo 2. The base of the tail is white as are the feathers at the edge of the tail.
