The Maroon Oriole is distributed along the Himalayas and into central and southern China and Taiwan extending southwards to Indochina, Thailand and Myanmar.

The male of the nominate sub-species, shown here in photos 1 and 2, has a glossy black head, neck and upper breast while the rest of the body is a deep maroon and the tail is a paler maroon. The eye is creamy white. Other sub-species are much more crimson in colour.

The female, shown here in photo 3, has a blackish head and back while below is whitish with blackish streaks. The rump and undertail coverts are pale maroon.

It is found in a variety of forest types where it feeds on nectar, berries, figs and insects.
